Finally the freezing temperatures in Atlanta are starting to warm up. However the Atlanta freeway shutdown was not the only thing affected by the freezing weather! All across Atlanta home owners have been calling in with frozen pipes or busted pipes do to the frigid temperatures.
Frozen pipes create bad situations because stagnant water builds up in the lines and turns to ice as the temperatures drop. When this happens pressure builds up and can cause cracks or complete breaks where the pipes are the most vulnerable. This happens to all forms of pipes: plastic, copper, Polybutylene, old pipes, and new pipes…. it doesn’t matter. And if the pipes break or sprout a leak it can flood hundreds of gallons worth of water into your home.
The best way to stop frozen pipes is to prevent the pipes from freezing. You can do a few things to help prevent freezing of pipes such as: allowing water to run at a slow drip, insulate exposed pipes, disconnect your water hose, and maintain a 65 degree indoor temperature. However sometime the most prepared home owners cannot prevent frozen pipes.
If you have frozen pipes immediately shut the main water line to help avoid the possibility of bursting a pipe. Once the main water line has been shut off, use a hair dryer to slowly thaw the pipe. Thoroughly inspect the line for any water leaks before turning the water main back on.
If you find a water leak please call Water Savers Atlanta Plumbing immediately.
