Has your hot water suddenly stopped working and you don't know what to do? Sometimes when your hot water heater stops working, it's due to something simple that can be fixed at home! There are several reasons a hot water heater stops, for instance the pilot light goes out. Here are a few quick tips and tricks from the professionals you can try before calling us! However, as a safetly precaution - before you do anything- please check fo the following immediate and potentially life threatening issues before jumping in and fixing the hot water heat yourself. Make sure there is no smell or trace scent of gas. If you smell gas immediately call the gas company or fire department and have the gas to the house cut off. Also before you do anything complete a visual and audio inspection; make sure there is no water on the floor by the tank and listen for the sound of running water. This is a sign of a busted water heater - you'll need to cut off the water and call Water Savers Plumbing.
The simplest reason a hot water heater fails is due to the pilot light. The pilot light is controlled by two things so we'll need to check them both. The obvious is that the pilot light has failed for whatever reason, sometimes they do that! Follow the instructions to light the pilot light on the instructions on the label of the tank, and enjoy that hot water! The more complicated reason the light went out is due to the sensor at the end of the thermocouple and light not being in direct contact. Makes sure that the sensor of the thermocouple and the light are in direct contact when the light is lit otherwise you need to realign them. Sometimes too, your thermocouple sensor might become covered by debris obstructing the direct contact of the flame with the thermocouple sensor - try to vacuum out the debris, but be careful to not move the alignment of the pilot light and the thermocouple.
Another quick thing to try at home is to turn everything off, then wait 5 minutes and turn it back on. Sometimes this might help flush gas from the line. If either of these methods doesn't work you could have a more serious problem.
